Heart song workshop

With Suekali and Mairi Campbell

*When: Friday 15 May – Monday 18 May 2020

Where: Lismore, Scotland

*Cancelled due to Covid-19. We’ll announce the rescheduled event when we can.*

A gathering of voices on the magical island of Lismore, Argyll with Mairi Campbell and Suekali.

Suekali brings her unique ability to cross the East/West musical bridge and shares her deep knowledge of the ancient Indian tradition of raga singing and heart based voice.

Mairi’s facilitation allows profound and playful encounters through voice, story and movement, helping participants find common threads and friendship.

About Suekali

Suekali has been immersed in the music of India since 1988, exploring classical raga, songs of Tagore and the heart music of the temples and wandering mystics. Expanding from her original training in western classical music, she has trained in creative arts education, ‘First Nature’ body and breath work, and taught in a variety of different cultures and contexts, with a particular passion for creating musical connection with children and adults considered to be unreachable and excluded. Since living in a rural sanctuary on the west coast of Scotland, she has been delving into Gaelic song and singing in wild nature.

In this workshop she will draw on her rich background to create opportunities for everyone to experience embodied singing from the heart. You will not ‘get anything’ from these workshops, rather you will be gently led through a process of shedding, letting go of the layers that get put upon our natural way of being, breathing, hearing and singing. There we discover the natural voice of the heart, resonating in the body.

About Mairi

Throughout her life and 30 year career as a musician (viola and voice), Mairi has sought out mentors in improvisation, viola and voice.  Her most recent work, solo stage shows of song, story and movement is described as visionary. Her gentle and humorous facilitation draws on many influences: InterPlay and Authentic Artist collective among others. She offers simple and yet effective ways of playing with what you already know and invite stretching if wanted. In this course she will facilitate group improvisations as a musician, inviting to soundings, words, image and movement and honour the personal and collective intentions of the participants. In other words we’ll create stuff and find endings!
